Ruan Jooste +

Ruan Jooste saturates an ideal of South Africa, now. A multi-layered digital pop art mish-mash of cultural references, local brands and, tellingly, aspirational luxury import iconography merge with the vibrant colour and energy of the country’s urban landscapes, cities and townships. He draws on and celebrates shared commonalities rather than enforced agendered divisions. What may appear a naïve ideal belies Jooste’s commentary, keenly revealed - a women excuding confident strength in iconic dress stands proudly before a backdrop also displaying a common street poster advertising ‘Safe Abortions’ via a mobile number. The ‘ultimate’ status symbol of a Louis Vuitton print, embedded with a well known local drink’s logo of a cow’s head. The paradox that is South Africa now, viewed by Jooste’s subjects, perhaps neccesarily, through rose-tinted glasses.

Kevin Mackintosh +

The works from Kevin Mackintosh’s near decade-long photographic project are notable for the perceived ancient ‘mysticism’ of Africa fusing seamlessly with his own legacy of European fables: his effortless grasp of Fellini-esque surrealism with contemporary magical realism and his strangely unquiet magpie interiors of memories and objects lost and found, form part of Mackintosh’s’s universe - a meeting of landscape, still-life, culture, fashion, and theatre. At once an homage to the work of legendary photographers Sadibé, Keïta and Sanlé; Mackintosh, through considered sets, backdrops, props, and styling, creates his world entirely, and in doing so both reconstructs and modernizes the idea of the classic posed portrait. Mackintosh’s work is featured in the Permanent Collection of the National Portrait Gallery (London), as well as multiple photography publications.

Hannalie Taute +

Hannalie Taute’s mixed media works interrogate her recurring theme around identity through the use of vintage photographs altered with tyre inner rubber inlays and hand embroidery. Remnants of a discarded past are reworked, subverting existing and historical narratives. Ghoulish, at times macabre, she reveals the night-world of colonial inheritance, the precarity of place and position, the surreality of conflicting custom and tradition through her own paracosm where fairytale characters, creatures and monsters find their way into bygone portraits. Hers is a white world that has curdled, turned rank – off. And yet, in her nightmarish vision there remains a tender, playful pathos. For Taute, nothing is ever whole or immune as she guts, replaces, stitches in an act of suturing – a stitching up of a wound or incision. Exhibitions include 16 solo and over 75 group shows worldwide.
