GALLERY SOVIEW

BOOTH B2

Founded in 2019 by Barbara Kokpavo, a serial entrepreneur and art lover, Gallery Soview is a contemporary art gallery located in the heart of Accra, Ghana. Focused on helping artists from Africa emerge and get better visibility inside and outside the continent, Gallery Soview organizes exhibitions and events to promote and develop artists’ careers. The founder also aims at creating emulation on the West African art scene, French and English speaking combined, with the ambition to stimulate the structuration of the art market locally and facilitate inter-connectivity with the international one. Artists presented by the gallery have in common their use of innovative techniques and up-cycled materials, proposing a deep exploration of Africa’s past, present and future, creating a new narrative at the crossroads of realism and afro-optimism.

Tesprit +

Born in 1994 in Lomé, Foli Kossi Gérard TETE, alias Tesprit, is a self-taught artist. Tesprit invites us into the contrasting universe of the Dzimakplao, the homeless children of Togo and allows us to understand the precariousness and vulnerability, but also the playfulness and optimism that are omnipresent in the daily lives of these children. These thick but light layers of soles assembled on the canvas, represent poses and actions taken from the realities of the streets of Lomé and project us into the stories and life paths of the Dzimakplao. Simply immortalized in their daily life, these faceless characters are like anonymous portraits that present the complex condition of children in this very particular current context that is our era. Deliberately colorful and luminous, his paintings eventually suggest joy and hope.

Daouda Traoré +

Born in 1987, in Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Daouda TRAORE graduated in Plastic Arts from the National Institute of Arts (INA) of Bamako and ended as top of the 2013 class of the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers MultiMédia Balla Fasseké KOUYATE. Teacher of plastic arts at the public high school of Sikasso, the daily lives of his students inspire him. The choice of materials is linked to his environment, which in a random way, provides him with used sheets, tin cans, bags of millet, wool strings and iron wires that he transforms thanks to a wide range of techniques. The result: unexpected textures that enliven the characters and the everyday situations he presents. Implicitly, the artist adds a jumble of letters dispatched in his works, thus composing his unreadable poems which carry the message of the importance of education and the transmission of knowledge, of the values which guide him as a man and educator in the current chaos of Mali.
