KALASHNIKOVV GALLERY

BOOTH C8

Kalashnikovv Gallery was founded in 2013 in response to the traditional white
cube gallery system by envisioning an alternative operational model for the
visual arts. It is administered and curated by two of Johannesburg’s deeprooted cultural instigators, MJ Turpin and Matthew Dean Dowdle who prioritize a
collaborative exchange in working with the artists they partner with. Kalashnikovv
Gallery currently represents a range of artists with emerging to established
careers. The gallery and its staff work in conversation with these artists to build
networks, exposure and foster personal growth through exhibitions, residencies,
art fairs and institutional projects. The gallery is both a commercial art space
as well as a project space for experimentation with an ethos of socio-political
engagement and accessibility.

Artists presented at AKAA 2022:

Theresa Anne-Mackintosh +

Theresa-Anne Mackintosh (b. 1968 - Pretoria, South Africa) obtained her MA in Fine Art (1995) from the University of Pretoria. After her studies, she began to explore her keen interest in animation, adding this to a broad platform of artistic practice that includes painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and other digital media. She develops her work from a position of quiet but intense subjectivity while remaining sensitive to the broader human condition. In the process, she has created a very distinct visual lexicon, giving shape to various personal situations, gestures and symbols in her paintings, drawings and sculptural works. Mackintosh’s representational renderings may on the surface appear to inhabit a naive, child-like aesthetic, but this stripped-down graphic sensibility carries a preverbal feeling that resonates deep within the viewer.

She has had six solo exhibitions to date, at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, Museum Africa and at blank projects.
