Bete Marques +

Bete Marques often incorporates into her artistic practice the use of everyday objects to create bold assemblies inspired by the visual plasticity of South American favelas, which promote an intense exploration of pigments and shapes. Covered in light and colour and sometimes accompanied by small hand-ignited music boxes, her installations reflect the social reality of many of the cities in her home country. These monumental favelas materialize the artist's gaze on Brazilian social reality and popular culture, comprising the image of a living and material structure whose interpretation depends on the historical analysis of local and global urban development. In her installations, Bete Marques also explores broader issues, such as ecology, globalized migrations, socioeconomic structures, and identity.

Pedro Pires +

Pedro Pires' research is primarily devoted to questions of identity, namely to the sense of a disrupted national identity, which the artist himself has experienced as an Angolan and Portuguese citizen. Using different techniques and everyday objects, the artist constructs unique figurative and conceptual sculptures and installations marked by anthropomorphic forms that emerge from partially destroyed materials, evoking the concepts of destruction and reconstruction. In his work, Pires reflects his unique social and political position towards Angola, Portugal, and the post-colonial framework that marks the history between these two countries. By drawing parallels with different realities, he urges us to ponder broader issues such as the contemporary reality of refugees and human rights.

Barbara Wildenboer +

Barbara Wildenboer’s work consists of collages, photo and paper constructions, installations, digitally animated photographic sculptures, and book arts. She uses a combination of analogue and digital processes to produce a diverse and rich body of work, in which she investigates the philosophical concept of aesthetics, phenomena such as temporality, fractal geometry, and the interconnectedness of all living things - from the microscopic to the immense. In her paper sculptures and collages, there is a playful aspect to creating references within other references. Resorting to images and information selected from various sources, Wildenboer constructs an alternate reality, reflecting on how humankind is affected by globalization, economic upheavals, scarcity, political corruption, wars, epidemics, and natural disasters.
