193 Gallery (193 for the number of countries in the world) aims at touring the world of contemporary art with exhibitions dedicated to specific countries and their emerging artists.
Artists presented at AKAA 2022 :
Derrick Ofosu Boateng, Hassan Hajjaj, Thandiwe Muriu, Marcel Tchopwe
Derrick Ofosu Boateng symbolises the youth of the continent who are taking over the internet quickly. His works, made on iPhones, are emblematic of mixed media. Strongly influenced by Anglo-Saxon culture, he boldly uses colour in everyday scenes, which are dedicated to "feel good". These characters celebrate the black body surrounded with bright tones. They go beyond the perception of movement: they are inhabited and embodied, and they overflow with life and communicative energy. It is also the colour and their discourse that animate the young artist. Participating in the Hueisms philosophy, each of Boateng’sworks is accompanied by a reflection or a colourful poem.

Hassan Hajjaj (1961) was born in Larache, Morocco and lives and works between Marrakech and London. He evolves between several artistic universes: photography, fashion, music, cinema and design while presenting a critical and uninhibited point of view on consumer society. He questions tradition and identity, focussing in particular on the wearing of the veil as well as on the daily love of the people he meets, friends or strangers crossed in the streets of Morocco or elsewhere.

Thandiwe Muriu (1990) works as a woman in a male-dominated world where she celebrates and empowers her fellow women. She values her African heritage and addresses issues such as identity and self-perception through the vibrant colours the continent is known for. With CAMO Thandiwe explores how individuals lose their identity to culture and questions her identity as an artist and as a black woman. By aiming to reclaim the self-esteem of African women, as they are often excluded from beauty standards, she is inspired by the use of everyday Kenyan objects. To illustrate, Thandiwe is passionate about the history of traditional hairstyles and incorporates modern forms into her work.

Marcel Tchopwe is born in the north of Cameroon. With a passion for drawing, he started studying at IBA in 2014. His work addresses the condition of children in a changing world, questioning the influences of adults on children, the limits imposed by these adults or the influence of media on the emancipation of children. To expand his artistic potential, Marcel spends much time in the studios of leading young artists of the contemporary Cameroonian scene, such as Jean Jacques Kanté and Jean-David Nkot. For AKAA, he presents a new series which denounces the abandonment of Cameroonian politics for the creation of jobs for young people who, over-qualified, come to flood the labour market that corresponds neither to their ambitions nor to their dreams.
