AKKA PROJECT

BOOTH C11

AKKA (A Kostic Khachatourian Art) Project is a commercial gallery and project space that represents and supports artists predominantly from the African continent and its diaspora, increasing opportunities for its artists to introduce their works to new geographies.
With two galleries in Dubai and Venice, AKKA Project brings a dynamic new dimension to the art world. The gallery is deeply committed to exploring the African art scene and its kaleidoscopic diversity. At AKKA Project, we provide
primarily emerging artists the opportunity to share their work internationally and start conversations to transcend cultural boundaries.

Artists presented at AKAA 2022:
Pamela Enyonu,  Jimmy Kitheka, Kelechi Charles Nwaneri

Pamela Enyonu +

Pamela Enyonu was born in 1985 in Kampala, Uganda where she still currently lives and works. She studied Art and Design at the Kyambogo University Banda of Kampala, Uganda. Her artistic career started in 2017 with a 3 months residency at 32 degrees East where she navigated the politics of identity, trauma, and healing. After her residency, she was invited to host a solo exhibition in June 2017. Pamela’s style is inspired by stories, materials, and the process it takes to transform them into works of art. Her works present a tactile and 3 dimensional quality that richly layered textures exploring narratives on gender, identity, empowerment, and self-awareness, that deals with Ugandan (African) women and their experiences. Pamela is particularly interested in the “untokenized” experiences occupying the intersection of empowerment, mental health, and identity.

Jimmy Kitheka +

Jimmy Kitheka was born in 1993 in Kenya, he currently lives in Ngong and works in Nairobi, where his studio is located. He studied graphics design in 2012 and worked as a graphics design lecturer in 2014, at Venture institute for a year before becoming a full time artist in 2015, under the mentorship of a well known artist in Kenya: Patrick Mukabi. For five years he worked together with Patrick Mukabi at his studio, until Jimmy together with some of his colleagues opened his own atelier, The Hive Art Studio. Jimmy is an impressionistic artist captivated by landscapes and oneiric scenarios; through shadows and blur effects Kitheka evokes a sense of nostalgia. His work allows us to travel back in time to stories told by his grandfather and father. Stories that retrace life in Nairobi in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

Kelechi Charles Nwaneri +

Kelechi Charles Nwaneri was born in 1994 in Nigeria and currently lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria. Inspired by Pencil Artists such as Kelvin Okafor, Arinze Stanley, and Ken Nwadiogbu, he initially focused on Pencil Realism and has evolved introducing other mediums such as acrylic paints, collages, watercolors, and oil paints. Kelechi’s style stands between Photorealism, Surrealism, and Postmodernism but perfectly fits into what he defines as Contemporary Surrealism. Inspired by events happening in his daily environment, he creates art with surrealistic imagery. A major characteristic of his work is the use of West-African Iconography, mystical, metaphysical, allegorical concepts, and the Black Hybrid Figure, inspired by the idea of scars and African Tribal Marks. As he says “A major feature of my work is the “Hybrid (Black) Figure inspired by the idea of scars and tribal marks. These figures are usually embedded with symbols (including mainly Adinkra, Uli, Nsibidi symbols), Automatic Lines, and Adire patterns using primarily Pencils and Charcoal sticks.”
