Hugh Byrne +

Hugh Byrne is a visual artist based in Cape Town. He completed an honours degree in fine art from the University of Pretoria. Whilst predominantly focusing on painting; previous exhibitions have included photography, sculpture and installation. Revisiting and recycling earlier, sometimes abandoned, painterly experiments are central to Hugh Byrne’s practice. They are the products of a constant process of creation, destruction, appropriation and rediscovery which ultimately trouble, and even collapse, the divisions between ‘painting’ and ‘object’. ' In his earlier works, Byrne often painted with a mapmaker’s sense of boundaries. So he stacked his colours like blocks or overlapped them as if making a collage, but he never caused them to mingle. The boundary prevailed. To a degree this method and understanding persists in his new work. Over time, though, Byrne has allowed himself to paint in a looser and messier style.

Plàcido “Pocho” Guimaraes +

Plácido “Pocho” Guimaraes, carries on the tradition of Equatorial Guinean textile craft practice, that has been passed down from generation to generation in local communities and Bubi culture. Contemporising these traditions, Guimaraes is a disciple of Josep Grau-Garriga and uses the high heddle technique, not traditional looms. The unusual materials he incorporates into his work are fabrics of African origin; old newspapers and waste materials, as well as objects found in the cities and natural environments around Malabo and Madrid. These found, residual objects and elements are loaded with personal or family meanings and each of the works he produces refers to a specific theme and reality of his immediate environment: his political dissidence, family customs and rituals. Touch and the tactile nature of his work are highly important elements to his work.

Kimathi Mafafo +

Kimathi Mafafo is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice ranges from embroidery, oil painting to installation. Born in Kimberley in the Northern Cape of South Africa, Mafafo questions historical stereotypes around gender inequality in Africa. She primarily focuses on celebrating the black female and abstracted forms placing them in often verdant imagery characterized by lush greenery and sensuous drapery, are far removed from the dusty mining town where she grew up. Her compositions are seductive in their level of detail yet remain curiously flat, emphasizing their highly staged nature and the narrative element, which is central to her work. Her imagery is partly guided by her desire to celebrate the black female form, inspiring women to embrace their own worth and beauty.

Anico Mostert +

Anico Mostert is a multi-disciplinary artist from Cape Town where she currently lives and works from her home studio. She graduated from Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town in 2017. Her approach to making is versatile, seeing her producing across ceramics, textile design, animation and painting. She allows her practice to be intuitive and exist as a process of learning and discovery. Anico uses reference images from social media to imagine still lifes of ordinary scenes, observing the elements of the medium for the artwork to determine itself. The works upend familiarity, reminiscent of home spaces, yet offering a surreal swing of imagery, where rooms are unpeopled and yet full of life and pictures of people are empty of objects. Her works exude a calm quietness, illustrating unexpected details and unassuming scenarios that verge on the mundane but are illuminated through her attention and careful colour choices.
