GALERIE VALLOIS

BOOTH C5

Gallery Vallois Modern and Contemporary was founded by Robert Vallois in 1983. Initially devoted to contemporary sculpture, the gallery has gradually opened up to other media and now represents painters, photographers and sculptors. Since 2012, Gallery Vallois promotes a young generation of African visual artists, mainly from Benin but also from Cuba. It is with the will to support and promote this young generation of artists that Gallery Vallois financed in 2013 the construction of the Arts and Cultures Center in Abomey-Calavi, a multidisciplinary space dedicated to contemporary creation.

Artists presented at AKAA 2022 :

Ninon Aglingo, Charly D’Almeida, Makef, Dominique Zinkpè

Ninon Aglingo +

After a Master's degree in Banking and Finance, Ninon Aglingo participates in several workshops and trainings in drawing and painting at the Galerie St Augustin, Cotonou and the Ouadada Cultural Centre in Porto Novo. She has been exhibiting since 2014. Ninon Aglingo has her own technique: with the tip of a fine brush, she places the drops of paint on the canvas, one after the other, with great patience and meticulousness. The artist draws her strength from a double heritage. Firstly that of Voodoo culture, present through the motif of the sacred python, which recurs in her paintings. Far from being terrifying or evil, the Great Python, dan or hon among the Adja, Houéda and Goun, is a promise of prosperity and peace. As with many Beninese artists, Christian culture is mixed with Voodoo. Thus, the theme of Vanity is very present in his work, inspired by Genesis. The anguish of death is transcended by his joyful and colourful painting where young women rub shoulders with the allegory of death with lightness, thanks to the protective presence of the Great Python.

Charly d’Almeida +

Born in 1968 in Cotonou (Benin). Lives and works between Cotonou and Orléans (France). Charly d’Almeida has been training for four years with painter and set designer Joseph Kpobly. He started creating sculptures around 2003. After participating in various exhibitions worldwide (France, Benin, Senegal, Milan, Naples, Berlin, Frankfurt…), he decided to open Le Cénacle expérimental, a studio and center for resident artists in Cotonou. In 2018, he established his own exhibition space, also in Cotonou : Gallery Charly. There the artist not only presents his own work but also organises events in order to promote the contemporary art scene. For a long time, Charly d’Almeida has been using burnt wood to make his highly graphic sculptures, however today he has turned to iron, a material associated in Voodoo tradition with divinity Gou or Ogoun – who is also the spirit of War

Makef +

MAKEF (real name Fulbert Makoutodé Énagnon). Born in 1967 in Cotonou, where he lives and works. Makef is a self-taught artist. Since he was a child he has been passionate about drawing. As an adult, he got the idea of using his children’s school notebooks as drawing material, including their writings and drawings in his own creations. Thus, working at night, he made an important series of works, by using only black ballpoint pen. Displaying great originality, he named this set Mes nuits insomniaques et quelques jours d’errance, which can be translated as My sleepless nights and a few wandering days. Makef develops various themes, from daily life to social satire, from proverbs to religion or politics, of which he is gladly critical. Often humorous, his drawings sometimes have an educational purpose or tend towards mysticism or fantasy, if not abstraction.

Dominique Zinkpè +

Born in 1969, in Cotonou (Benin). Lives and works between Cotonou and Abomey. Painter and sculptor, Dominique Zinkpè is one of the main living artists in Benin. He was drawn to art at a very early age, and, as there was no specialized school in Benin, he trained himself thanks to his great curiosity and by studying books. Later, he would take care of younger Beninese artists, providing them with training. If one can notice in his paintings the influence of Francis Bacon or Jean-Michel Basquiat, it is actually in the depth and richness of Beninese culture and Voodoo religion that he mostly draws inspiration. Works by Dominique Zinkpè can be found in numerous private and public collections. Shown around the world, his artwork has been playing a major role in the recognition of African contemporary art and its international reach. Since 2014, he has been running the Centre Arts et Cultures in Cotonou.
