AFIKARIS

BOOTH B7

Founded in 2018, with the mission to promote artists from Africa and its diaspora, the AFIKARIS gallery moved in December 2020 to 38 rue Quincampoix, just a few steps away from the Centre Pompidou, and opened a second space in July 2022 in the upper Marais, at 7 rue Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth, which will become its permanent space in December 2022. The gallery highlights the work of artists from Africa and its diaspora and aims to give them international visibility through its own exhibitions and by presenting their work at fairs, as well as by collaborating with cultural institutions.

The gallery aims to be a place of exchange, expression and dialogue that allows for a conversation with the public. It gives its artists a voice on current issues as well as on issues that are close to their hearts. It is also a space for reflection on the artistic scene of the African continent and highlights its emerging talents as well as those already renowned.

Artists presented at AKAA 2022:
Moustapha Baidi Oumarou, Matthew Eguavoen, Jean David Nkot, Hyacinthe Ouattara

Moustapha Baïdi Oumarou +

Moustapha Baidi Oumarou was born in Maroua, Cameroon in 1997. From an early age, his sense of observation allowed him to approach life with a philosophical and open-mind.  Moustapha’s taste for drawing led him to work with a silk-screen printing workshop. Encouraged by his entourage, he turned to painting and presented his first works as a self-taught artist. In 2013, he won the 3rd prize of visual arts at the Yawalta Maroua festival.    Oumarou observes his surroundings but adopts a visionary gaze on the world, the gaze of a conscious and humanistic painter. This humanism can be found in his work as an approach to express what the words of the forgotten and the most vulnerable cannot say.

Matthew Eguavoen +

Matthew Eguavoen was born in 1988 in Edo State, Nigeria. He currently lives and works in Lagos.  Matthew Eguavoen attended the University of Port Harcourt, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil and Structural Engineering. It was during his final year at the university that he decided to pursue his passion for art. Eguavoen developed his artistic practice by himself.   The artist turned to figurative art and created mainly portraits and documents the stories of his models, focusing on their emotions and attitudes.  Matthew Eguavoen addresses societal, economic and political issues in his work through the complex intersectionality that Nigerians face in their lives.

Jean-David Nkot +

Jean David Nkot was born in 1989 in Douala, Cameroon, where he lives and works. After a BAC in painting at the Institute of Artistic Training of Mbalmayo, Jean David joined the Institute of Fine Arts of Foumban where he obtained a degree in drawing and painting. Jean David Nkot's work depicts the human condition. After focusing on the theme of migration, since 2020 he has been interested in the exploitation of raw materials in Africa and the economic and political issues that accompany it. Nkot shows how financial interests dominate and have taken over any consideration of human beings and nature. The artist's work invites us to rethink our model to protect both humans and the planet.

Hyacinthe Ouattara +

Hyacinthe Ouattara was born in 1981 in Burkina Faso and lives and works in Paris, France. A self-taught artist, Hyacinthe Ouattara first represented the human body in a dreamlike, ghostly and childlike way before penetrating its entrails and focusing his work on the anatomy of cellular tissues through his "human cartographies". Matter, texture and colour are of great importance in his paintings. His drawings are spontaneous, gestural and question the human being.
This year, the artists work was part of the Dakar Biennale and the Kinshasa Biennale.
