The Dominican Republic-born artist Jose Carcia Cordero (1951) is seen as the Master of Caribbean surrealism. While living and working between his native island and France, in his absurd paintings he criticises living between the Caribbean and European culture. The artist provides artworks which are created ad hoc specifically for the theme of human migration, where geopolitics and natural obstacles play a major role in the fate of migrants. He studied painting with the Dominican master Hernández Ortega. In 1977, fleeing the Balaguer dictatorship, he moved to Paris in voluntary exile where he studied contemporary history at the University of Vincennes. In the course of his career, he has received numerous recognitions, such as the “Medal of Merit” awarded by the French Senate for his contributions to Latin American culture.
