Ninon Aglingo

20 September 2022

After a Master’s degree in Banking and Finance, Ninon Aglingo participates in several workshops and trainings in drawing and painting at the Galerie St Augustin, Cotonou and the Ouadada Cultural Centre in Porto Novo. She has been exhibiting since 2014. Ninon Aglingo has her own technique: with the tip of a fine brush, she places the drops of paint on the canvas, one after the other, with great patience and meticulousness. The artist draws her strength from a double heritage. Firstly that of Voodoo culture, present through the motif of the sacred python, which recurs in her paintings. Far from being terrifying or evil, the Great Python, dan or hon among the Adja, Houéda and Goun, is a promise of prosperity and peace. As with many Beninese artists, Christian culture is mixed with Voodoo. Thus, the theme of Vanity is very present in his work, inspired by Genesis. The anguish of death is transcended by his joyful and colourful painting where young women rub shoulders with the allegory of death with lightness, thanks to the protective presence of the Great Python.
