Thandiwe Muriu
Thandiwe Muriu (1990) works as a woman in a male-dominated world where she celebrates and empowers her fellow women. She values her African heritage and addresses issues such as identity and self-perception through the vibrant colours the continent is known for. With CAMO Thandiwe explores how individuals lose their identity to culture and questions her identity as an artist and as a black woman. By aiming to reclaim the self-esteem of African women, as they are often excluded from beauty standards, she is inspired by the use of everyday Kenyan objects. To illustrate, Thandiwe is passionate about the history of traditional hairstyles and incorporates modern forms into her work.
